Tarangire National Park
Tarangire National Park boasts one of the highest population densities of elephants in Tanzania, making it a popular destination for wildlife enthusiasts. The park’s sparse vegetation is adorned with stunning baobab and acacia trees, providing a beautiful and distinctive landscape.
Located just a few hours’ drive from the town of Arusha, Tarangire is a must-visit stop for anyone travelling through the northern safari circuit on their way to Ngorongoro and the Serengeti. The park extends into two game-controlled areas, allowing wildlife to move freely throughout.
During the dry season, visitors to Tarangire can witness an unparalleled game viewing experience, as families of elephants play around the ancient trunks of baobab trees and strip acacia bark from thorn trees for their afternoon meal. The park is also home to a variety of wildlife, including gazelles, wildebeests, zebras, giraffes, and dry-country antelope like the stately fringe-eared oryx and peculiar long-necked gerenuk.
Tarangire is renowned for its vast concentration of wildlife, making it a smorgasbord for predators. The park is also a bird-lover’s paradise, with over 550 bird varieties, the most breeding species in one habitat anywhere in the world.
To reach Tarangire, visitors can easily drive from Arusha or Lake Manyara along a surfaced road to within 7km of the main entrance gate. Charter flights from Arusha and the Serengeti are also available.
In addition to game drives, visitors can also take part in guided walking safaris and day trips to nearby Maasai and Barabaig villages, as well as the hundreds of ancient rock paintings in the vicinity of Kolo on the Dodoma Road.
There are a variety of accommodation options available, including two lodges, one tented lodge, two luxury tented camps inside the park, and several exclusive lodges and tented camps located just outside its borders. There are also several campsites in and around the park for those who prefer to camp.
